Theodore Albert Rees Cheney

This week a great man, my grandfather, Theodore Albert Rees Cheney, passed away. This picture was taken on his 80th birthday (January first of this year) I am so grateful that he had an opportunity to meet his great-grandson and that we were able to document it.
Grandpa Cheney was an amazing man that had great influence on all of his children and grandchildren's lives. He was an author, photographer, and professor. He was always happy to help me correct any papers I had written. Unfortunately by the end of correcting one essay, the pages were littered with his characteristic green pen. He was the ultimate proof reader, yet still let me proof read his books before he sent them to be published. He would take me out on photography trips with him. A picture I took with him even won first prize at the Sandwich Fair (a big deal to me at the time!) He loved to share his wealth of knowledge. He once told me that he first majored in psychology before majoring in geology, then for his masters he majored in geography then communication, and then he ended up being an English professor! In short, there was a lot of knowledge there to be spread around.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I am grateful for the knowledge that I will see him again someday and that this was not "good bye" but a "see you soon"or as Grandpa would say "Good Ribbons!" (good riddance)

My dad, 84 years young, has always told anyone who would listen, that books are a necessity of life. If you're curious, it's probably in a book and that the authors spent many hours writing them. He still reads constantly. I only recently discovered your grandfather's books, and have learned quite a bit from them. You're lucky to have shared your life with such a special grandpa. It's nice of you to open your heart and tell others about him. Thank you.

Of course he was a great man-! =) I'm currently reading his book, Getting the Words Right, and finding it both useful and a joy to read. I'm very sorry to hear that he passed away last year.

Thanks to your grandfather's books, Getting the Words Right and Writing Creative Nonfiction, I have had a wonderful writing career of which I'm very proud--from articles in Time Magazine, Seventeen, Police, Hispanic, Phoenix, Tennis and more than 125 others to my first book winning two first place state press club awards and a second place national press club award.

I couldn't have done it without the advice he offered in his books. I realize that sounds a bit over the top, but before I got his books, I could have papered my walls, as the saying goes, with those rejects. His books literally opened the door to my understanding what I'd been doing wrong. Surely he grew wings before he left this world because he truly was an angel in my life.

A belated thank you, Theodore Rees Cheney!

And to you, you had an incredible grandfather.

Theodore Albert Rees Cheney, a grand name for a great man. Although we never met, I felt as though I knew him a little through his book 'Getting the Word Right'. I have had a first edition for years and still refer to it from time to time. It is one of the seminal works on good writing. You get the impression that he really enjoyed helping his students; I didn't know that his comments were always in green.

Please accept my belated condolences for your sad loss.

To the Sargent Family,
I'm sorry for your loss. It appears that words are timeless, outliving their author.
This inspires me as an aspiring author in the process of writing my first book proposal.
In the library, I checked out your grandfather's book, Getting the Words Right, and searched for him on google to thank him for the wisdom contained within the pages.
I am sorry to hear my thanks will not reach him in this life. His legacy not only lives in the hearts of his family, but also in his books.
God Bless,
Theresa Anderson

I just learned of your grandfather's passing as I looked him up on the Web. My condolences to you and your family.

I have been a copy editor for much of my news career. I have the first and second editions of his book, "Getting the Words Right," and I very much appreciate the story in the Introduction of George Plimpton's 1958 interview with Ernest Hemingway.
